CHAPTER TWENTY THREE

“What’d you get?” Colleen asked as he approached them in the food court again.

“Some dark fantasy books,” Atticus replied. “Kind of hoping to get inspired, get in the right mindset, although honestly I just want to read new stuff. My life was nothing but crunching to get Cold Reset out for too long and everything went on the cutting room floor but that game, including reading.”

“I know the feeling,” Colleen said.

He noticed they both seemed, if not in higher spirits, then at least calmer.

“So, food?” he asked.

“Yes,” Edith replied, looking at one of the nearby restaurants, “I would like that a lot.”

“I’m ready to eat,” he said.

“Let’s eat,” Colleen replied, and led them over.

The place seemed to very much stick out and for a moment he wasn’t sure why. But then he took a look around and realized that this place was the only food stall that wasn’t franchised. Happy Luck looked like an independently owned restaurant and he suddenly wondered if he’d ever seen that before in a mall.

He must have, but he couldn’t think of an example. As he caught a whiff of the food, his hunger immediately grew.

“Hmm…” he murmured as he studied the menu.

“Thinking of anything in particular?” Colleen asked.

“Definitely some potstickers and some beef fried rice. But...exactly how spicy is ‘Crazy Spicy Chicken’?”

“It’s actually very, very spicy,” Edith said. “I had it once and regretted it.”

“How did it taste?” he asked.

“Extremely good, but still wasn’t worth it,” she replied.

“I see.”

They ordered. He ended up getting everything he’d said, including the spicy chicken. Edith looked amused as they waited for their order.

“You’re going to regret that, I think. There’s no milk around,” she said.

“I’ve got a pretty iron stomach,” he replied.

“Is this one of those boy things?” Colleen asked suddenly.

“What do you mean?” he replied.

“You know, that thing that so many boys and men do, where they’re trying to impress a girl by doing something really stupid and painful.”

“Oh, that thing,” Edith said.

He chuckled. “No, I just want to try the chicken.” He paused. “Would that work? If I was trying?”

“No,” Edith replied, crossing her arms.

“Mmm...I don’t know,” Colleen murmured, smiling at him, “I mean, it must be a common instinct for a reason.”

“Yes, there’s lot of stupid girls out there,” Edith said.

“So you won’t be impressed if I finish all the chicken?” Atticus asked.

“I mean...I’ll be impressed, I guess, but not...turned on,” she muttered.

“You sure about that?” Colleen asked.

“Yes! And here’s our food,” she said determinedly, blushing again.

They gathered up their meals and headed for one of the many nearby tables. They sat down and he opened up the sytrofoam container they’d put his food into. He took a whiff and then started coughing.

“Told you,” Edith murmured.

“Man, that’s strong,” he said.

“You are thoroughly washing your mouth out before you put it anywhere near my...nether regions,” Colleen said.

He chuckled. “Understood.”

“Such a good boy,” she murmured with a sly smile, and went back to eating her food.

“Are you going to watch me eat it?” Atticus asked as he realized Edith was still staring at him.
